Lampedusa is a small island in the province area of Agrigento but it’s closer to Africa then to Europe. It’s the southernmost spot of Italy. There live 4500 people.
The local economy is based mainly on fishing and tourism In the last few years its inhabitants have been facing the problem of illegal immigrants coming from Africa. It has been inhabited since bronze age. Archaelogists have found remains from Greek, Roman and Byzantine time.
In 1553 it was conquered by the Turkish, then by the Spanish Bourbons who controlled the island till 1860. Since then it has been part of Italy.
A part of its southern coast has been declared natural reserve and bird sanctuary. The Conigli beach is the only place in Italy where the Caretta Caretta turtles still nest regularly.
The fish fair takes place in Lampedusa in August. The music festival O’SCIA’ which has been conceived by the famous Italian singer Claudio Baglioni takes place in September.
