In Licata live 42000 people.
It stands to the east of Agrigento on the way to Gela and by the mouth of the river Salso, one of the major Sicilian rivers.
The area has been inhabited since Neolithic Age and it is rich of archaeological sites.
During the Greek time it was an important military post of Akragas, that is Agrigento.
Its Sant’Angelo castle has been used since the ancient past because of its strategic position.
Since the 16th till the 19th century it has suffered from the pillages made by the Turks and the pirates.
The harbour was made in the 19th century to export the sulphur coming from the nearby mines.
July the 10th 1943 the American allies landed on the local beach of Torre di Gaffe, and that was the very first landing of the Allies in Europe during WW2.
Licata is the birth place of Angelo Italia , a Jesuit architect who was protagonist of the Sicilian baroque time, and of Rosa Balistreri, one of the most important Sicilian singers.
The most important religious feasts are the Holy Week and the one dedicated to the patron Saint of Licata, that is Sant’Angelo which takes place May the 15th every year .
The popular Fish Fair is very interesting and it occurs in August
The TOWN HALL was planned by the most important Sicilian art nouveau architect, that is Ernesto Basile.
The SANTA MARIA LA NUOVA MOTHER CHURCH is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and it represents a rare example of renaissance architecture in Sicily. It dates from 1508.
The ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM is located in and old monastery and it’s worth a visit.
The CASTLE was built in 1615. It was bombed during the D Day, July 10th 1943. It has been recently renovated and it’s open to visitors.
SAN GIROLAMO CHURCH has recently become famous because of a painting representing San Girolamo and the lions which is thought to be by Caravaggio.
