Naro there live 11500 people.
It stands inland to the east of Agrigento on the way to Gela.
It’s rich of history and of monuments.
It was inhabited since prehistory and in the area there are very interesting archaeological sites.
In Middle Ages it belonged to the Chiaramonte family which had French origins and was one of the most powerful families in Sicily in the 14th century. In the following centuries it was the seat of several different religious orders which had their own monasteries in the town and most of them were built in baroque style.
The most important religious feast takes place in June and it is dedicated to Saint Calogero who was an hermit from Carthage who lived in the 6th century.
A Folk Spring Festival takes place in February. That’s the time of the year when almond trees bloom.
The SANCTUARY OF SAINT CALOGERO dating from 1599 and built on top of the cave where the Saint hermit used to live.
The OLD MOTHER CHURCH is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and it represents a rare example of renaissance architecture in Sicily. It dates from 1508.
The NEW MOTHER CHURCH is rich of works of art and originally it used to be part of the Jesuit Monastery from the 17th century.
THE CHURCH OF SAINT AGOSTINO was built originally in Middle Ages and it was renovated in the 17th century. It’ rich of works of art and it has a very interesting sacristy.
SAINT FRANCESCO CHURCH was built originally in Middle Ages and it was renovated in the 17th century. Its baroque façade and sacristy are unique.
SANTA CATERINA CHURCH dates from middle ages. In the basement of the church you find a room where corpses used to be processed in order to loose their liquids before being buried in the church.
The CASTLE was built in middle ages by the Chiaramonte family and it is well preserved. The view from there is gorgeous. It has been recently renovated and it’s open to visitors. There you find an exhibition of dresses worn by local wealthy ladies between the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century.
THE GAETANI PALACE used to belong to the most important local family and it’s in baroque style.
